WRITING

“It...It was…It was a dark and stormy night.”

Comedy.

So much of our modern lives takes place in coffeeshops, and yet we haven’t tapped this well for its storytelling potential. Having worked as a barista for a long, long time, I knew I had lots of stories to share, but it wasn’t until I came out while working at a coffeeshop that I found a unifying theme to bring those experiences together. I decided to honor the many LGBT folks I’d worked with over the years by creating a workplace comedy about queer people, entitled “THE GROUND LEVEL.” A producer friend helped me rally the troops to put on a successful staged reading, and when it’s safe for us all to work in the same room together again, I would love to put this show into production.

Shorts.

My first summer in LA, I set a challenge for myself to write a short script every day. The prompts were random—a person I’d talked to might inspire a character, a news story might inspire a topic, or a daydream on the bus might inspire an adventure. Over 60 days, I hopped genres thru fantasy, mystery, romance, and more, and created 60 original 3-5 minute scenes. Okay, one was based on Star Trek—the other 59, though, are all mine.
